Preparing for a Chiropractic Career

When getting ready for a chiropractic career, the first thing to know is that there will be many jokes and ribbing along the way by people who like to joke that chiropractors aren’t doctors.

A chiropractor treats illness and injury without medicines or drugs, and they do no surgery, so there are those that take pleasure in teasing them as a skilled professional. However, in physician careers, a chiropractor is a specialty doctor.

They go to medical school and learn anatomy and take state licensure tests to become professional healers. A chiropractor is a person who specializes in the body’s structure and healing through manipulation, exercise, temperature, massage and other gentle therapies.

The chiropractor candidate must have a bank of classes under their belt before applying to chiropractic college, and the grades from those classes should be good.

Have a Well-Rounded Education Before you Apply

The least someone can get away with when applying to chiropractic colleges? Some will accept students who have excellent grades with one year of biology, one of physics and two of chemistry. Other schools require more than that minimum of one year of biology. Four to five semesters of biology (besides general biology)  including biochemistry, cell biology, zoology and physiology is recommended for proper performance in the first years of chiropractic college, with a solid perception of social sciences and humanities.

Writing, business, computer science application and statistics couldn’t hurt; there’s no such thing as too much knowledge. To be the best, take everything available so that the chiropractic college will see that the student has all the dedication necessary for any medical position.

Alternative Medicine Is Not Completely Free Of Risks And Complications

Is it advisable to choose alternative medicine simply because it happens to be less expensive as compared to conventional medicine? Conventional medicine is a very safe option because there are many safeguards present to protect the interests of the patients. From the regulatory authority that prescribes the course for doctors to the institution that regulates hospitals and medical institutions in the country-There are many protective agencies at work. These agencies did not exist for alternative medicine therapies.

If you have a choice between conventional medicine and alternative medicine, it makes sense to opt for the former unless the cost is prohibitively high. Of course, alternative medicine is not always a less expensive option. It often adopts a holistic approach that requires wholesale changes in the lifestyle.

Well you may not be spending a lot on medicine and hospitals if you opt for this form of medicine. However, you will have to spend a lot for implementing the changes in your lifestyle. This is unavoidable. From changing your staple diet to various herbs and medicines that you may have to buy-the costs may quickly add up.

Another reason that you have to consider is whether the alternative medicine is genuine and offers real relief. There are many fraudulent people who come up with fancy names describing a set of exercises as Chinese and Indian medicine and charge a lot of money from their patients. Make sure you deal with a person who is a registered practitioner of alternate medicine.

There are several different reasons that people turn to alternative medicine to assist with some of the medical and physical issues that they encounter. It can be because of faith, finances or your sunday ticket to instant relief. As the number of patients continues to increase health insurance companies are finding their customers looking for some type of coverage. While each plan and policy is different there are some things that you can do to figure out which treatments and appointments are covered for you and your family.

When you sign up for health insurance you get all kinds of paperwork. You may not read through most of it but be sure to skim through to look for words like alternative medicine, healthy choices, or even the name of the specific treatment that you are searching for. There may be a section on chiropractic visits, acupuncture or even massage therapy. Read carefully the information provided. It should tell you how many appointments are covered or if they are not covered the type of discount that you can expect to receive as a result of your insurance.

There may also be a list of recommended providers where you can schedule your covered appointments or be able to take advantage of the discount. Check to see if this is a location that you are familiar with. If you already see a certain practitioner but they aren’t on the list you can contact your medical insurance provider to see if there is another discount or reimbursement plan that you can participate in. You want to make sure that you get the most out of the plan you are paying for.

Chiropractic in Utah

Chiropractic

Chiropractic medicine has always carried along its fans and critics. Often people think of it as a “new” type medicine. Although not new it does offer alternatives to traditional medicine that can be most beneficial.

History

What is chiropractic medicine? Chiropractic medicine in general is the manual manipulation of joints and muscles to decrease misalignment, stiffness and atrophy. Now there are other modalities used in addition to the hands to assist in the overall outcome. These could be ice, heat, electrical stimulation to name a few. Chiropractic began in 1895 by Dr. Daniel D. Palmer and the patient’s hearing was restored. Chiropractic treatment has been available in Utah at least as early as 1923 when Utah passed the Chiropractic Law. It has been present ever since.

Why Use Chiropractic?

Chiropractors can help some injuries to the spine and neck in a non-invasive manner. Since everything in the body is connected some way through the brain and spinal cord, there is evidence that an impingement here or a herniation there can indeed affect different areas of health. Releasing the pressure can improve the patient’s overall health. Traditional chiropractic care is becoming more widely accepted.

Acceptance is Growing

In Utah, even the well known Brigham Young University takes a doctor of chiropractic medicine with the football team on the road with them. The initial assessment and first aid in a serious football accident can be critical. Alternative medicine methods such as chiropractic care are being more widely accepted as people in general become more educated. People seem to be more comfortable receiving information, weighing it for themselves and deciding if it will work for them. That’s progress!

What Is Alternative Medicine?

You might have heard about alternative medicine, and some of you might even have sought help from such practices at one point of time to get rid of the illness that has been plaguing you for a long time. So what exactly is alternative medicine and why is it considered different from the conventional medicine? Why it is not considered equal to the traditional medicine?

Alternative medicine or medical practice is a practice which is different from the conventional practice. This is to say that the way the treatment is done is not similar to the way done in traditional medicine. For example, take acupuncture. This treatment uses needles and vitals points of the body to treat and cure a person of the illness he has, like for drug addiction.

Though there are some alternative medical practices that have turned to be a complete waste of time, there are some which are truly effective. The effective practices are well established and known for their efficiency to cure for a particular disease. Also, it should be noted that the alternative medicine sometimes does not include all the aspects of traditional medicine, or a treatment for every disease.

It is different from traditional medicine and not considered equal to it because the traditional medicine is based on established scientific facts and tests. Traditional medicine theories and practice is based completely upon scientific findings and plenty of tests on various matters before actually launching it for the treatment of the public.

The alternative medicine, on the other hand is based on historical or cultural treatments. This is not to say that it is not good, only that it doesn’t have a solid scientific foundation, or so some experts say. It would perhaps be safe to assume that medicine, be it alternative or not, can be effective for some people while not so for others.

Drug Free Care for Back Pain

Chiropractic medicine is an alternative to drugs for many sufferers of back pain. While certain muscle relaxers and pain killers can help alleviate some of the discomfort, many patients who were given an alternative preferred some form of drug free pain management. A chiropractor is a practitioner of alternative medicine, which simply means that they take a different approach from a typical doctor of medicine. They use a hands on type of approach to adjust the spine and or manipulate the back and neck to alleviate pain and discomfort.

Back pain is one of the most common reasons a person may visit a chiropractor. Whether it is due to a chronic condition, scoliosis or even an automobile accident, chiropractors are usually sought out to help manage the back pain that a patient is experiencing. Perhaps they have tried traditional means of pain management or feel that they would like to try something that doesn’t involve drugs or medications first. Whatever the reason may be, the chiropractic office will first do an evaluation, which usually includes x-rays and an evaluation. Some patients may be treated the same day if the doctor decides that an adjustment will be potentially helpful. If so, they may do the adjustment or spine manipulation and schedule a certain number of follow up visits that they deem necessary for the patient to get relief.

While this is a drug free alternative, some chiropractors do also encourage the use of natural herbal drugs that are non-addictive and helpful with pain. These can be natural muscle relaxers or natural pain medications. Each chiropractor is different and may choose to use no drugs at all.

For the most part, chiropractic medicine is an excellent source to check into when looking to alleviate back pain the natural way. Many patients have had success with this type of doctor.

What to Expect at a Chiropractic Appointment

If you’ve never seen a chiropractor, you don’t know what you’re missing. Chiropractic treatment is an effective way to treat pain, muscle and joint problems, and other maladies without resorting to medication or other unnatural medical treatments. After choosing a chiropractor, prepare yourself for your first appointment by learning what to expect.

Arrive early so that you can fill out paperwork. Chiropractors like to know as much as they can about you so they can give you the most holistic treatment possible. If you have it available, bring your family history as well as your own health history. It should include illnesses, diseases that run in the family, and any injuries you’ve sustained.

After giving your paperwork to the chiropractor, you’ll have an initial consultation. Your chiropractor will ask about the problem or pain that brought you in for care and discuss how your history and lifestyle may have contributed to it.

After getting a clear picture of your chiropractic problem, the chiropractor will share a little bit about his or her approach to treatment with you. At this point, you can decide whether or not the chiropractor’s treatment approach is in line with what you hope to achieve. If not, you can end the appointment and try a new chiropractor.

If you agree with the chiropractor’s approach, you can move on to create a treatment plan. It should include the treatments to be used, how often they are to be done, and when you will get reevaluated. If it’s necessary, you may receive a chiropractic treatment or adjustment right away at your first appointment.

Once you pursue chiropractic treatment, it’s sure to become an important part of your health regimen. Keep in contact with your chiropractor to ensure that your treatment goals are being met and that you are experiencing relief from your pain.

A Look at Alternative and Complementary Medicine

Have you thought about seeking alternative or complementary medical treatment? There are five general categories of these types of medicine that are outlined by the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine. They include?

–A variety of techniques are used in mind-body medicine. These techniques and therapies are intended to improve a mind’s ability to affect the body’s symptoms and functions. Some of these types of therapies have been recently accepted into the mainstream medical community, from their beginnings with the alternative medicines. These include such therapies as cognitive-behavioral therapy and support groups.

–Alternative medical systems are those that have been based on total systems of practice and theory. Some examples of this type of medical therapy include naturopathic and homeopathic medicine. Many of these types of systems were developed before conventional medical practices with many having been developed outside Western medicine.

–The use of nature substances including herbs, and natural foods and vitamins are the basis for biologically based therapies. This type of alternative and complementary medicine uses herbal products and dietary supplements, and in addition may use other natural (but scientifically unproven) theories and therapies. One example of this is the use of shark cartilage in the treatment of cancer.

–Body-based and manipulative methods used in alternative medicine concentrate on movement or manipulation of parts of the body. These types of therapies can include massage therapy and chiropractic manipulation.

–The use of energy fields involved in energy therapies can be found in two types of methods: biofield and bioelectromagnetic. Biofield therapies are used to affect those energy fields surrounding the body (the existence of which as not been proven scientifically). Examples of this type of therapy include Reiki and therapeutic touch.

Bioelectromagnetic therapies use alternative use of electromagnetic fields. These fields include alternating or direct-current fields, magnetic fields and pulsed electromagnetic fields.

What to Expect at the Chiropractor

Let’s say you are having significant pain in either your back or neck and have decided to visit a chiropractor because you like the idea of getting your condition resolved without any medicine or surgery. What should you expect from your first visit to the chiropractor?

The short way to answer that question is that visiting a chiropractor is not much different than going to any doctor, with the exception of the potential treatment for your back or neck pain. The office staff will get your insurance information and you’ll likely be asked to fill out forms describing your medical history. Expect the initial visit to the chiropractor to last about an hour, with much of the initial portion of the visit focusing on your medical history and description of the pain that has prompted you to visit the doctor. The chiropractor may take X-rays to examine the area of discomfort.

It’s very likely that if any spinal adjustments are necessary, they will begin at your very first visit. You may be laying down on a table or in a sitting position and it isn’t unusual to be asked to undress and wear a hospital gown. The adjustment itself normally is a very quick process in which the chiropractor pushes down or otherwise applies pressure to a part of your spine. Most likely, you’ll hear a sound that is very similar to the noise from cracking knuckles. There should be no pain from the adjustment – perhaps some momentary discomfort. For many patients, the adjustment is an immediate reduction of stress and tension in the affected areas and you may notice immediately that you have more flexibility than when you arrived at the chiropractor.

That adjustment may be followed with heat, massage or other therapies. Your entire course of treatment is likely to be two to four weeks long with two to three visits a week.
