If you’re experiencing chronic back pain, chiropracters may be able to help. Many people who are having chronic pain turn to traditional Western medicine. They will typically be given an examination followed by a number of tests. Next, they may be offered a regimen including physical therapy, pain relievers and anti-inflammatory drugs, or surgery.
Frequently, patients find little if any relief from these methods. The drugs may mask the pain for a while, but the body has a way of building up a tolerance that requires increased dosages. While this may be fine for the anti-inflammatory medications, addiction issues can present a problem for almost any patient with long-term use of narcotic pain killers. Frequently, the brain even begins to send extra pain signals in order to receive more narcotics without the conscious knowledge of the patient. In a weird way, the pain medication can actually begin to cause a certain level of pain.
Some patients find that one back surgery is all they need to be back to normal. Unfortunately, this is the exception to the rule. Most people find that they need more than one operation, or that they do not find the relief that they were expecting.
When the patient goes to chiropracters for care, they will find an all-natural, alternative method to controlling back pain. It will have some things in common with physical therapy, but it’s far from the same thing. The chiropractor will examine the patient and review any X-rays, MRI’s, or other images. If none have been taken recently, they may order new tests. They will review the patient’s history thoroughly and develop a comprehensive treatment plan that includes dietary and supplement recommendations in addition to some other life changes.
Once the chiropracters begin treatment, the patient will visit the office two to three times a week for the fist few months. Spinal manipulations will be performed to properly align the discs during each visit. Heat therapy and other electronic stimulation may also be used. For some patients, basic massage techniques are added. As the patient progresses, they will begin to feel relief.
